Modern data storage and sensor technology based on magnetic phenomena has become an integral part of everyday life. In recent years, the storage density of magnetic storage media has increased exponentially. This was not only due to the rapid development in theoretical understanding but also due to the progress in experimental fabrication of new materials and structures. In this lecture, we will cover magnetic phenomena starting from the fundamentals to relevant issues from current research.

We will start out by discussing the basic types of magnetism (dia-, para-, ferro-, antiferro-, ferrimagnetism) after which we will develop the microscopic models for interactions, such as the exchange interaction. Based on this, the most important aspects in magnetism will be addressed, which will cover topics such as magnetic anisotropy, temperature dependencies, surface and interface effects, etc. One of the cutting edge topics in magnetism, which is strongly application-oriented, is the fabrication and analysis of spin-dependent transport phenomena. In this field, which is called spintronics, the interaction between magnetism and electric currents is studied. Whithin the context of this, various phenomena and their relevancy for applications will be discussed, e.g. giant and tunnel magnetoresistance, spin-transfer effects, etc.

The material of the lectures is further discussed and deepened in the accompanying tutorial.
